Our preference for a new coding learner
freeCodeCamp offers a free coding curriculum with projects. That makes it a useful first comparison for a beginner who has not yet built anything independently. We would rather see one small completed program and an explanation of its choices than a paid catalog full of abandoned courses.
Coursera Plus becomes more attractive when you have identified an included course sequence, understand the prerequisites and prefer its particular instruction and assignments. This is not a claim that all Coursera teaching is better, or that one platform suits every learner. Course-level quality matters more than the subscription label.

The honest weakness of the free recommendation
Free access does not mean zero effort or that the curriculum will match your preferred explanation style. A project-led path can leave a learner needing a different explanation, feedback or a study group. We would change course if repeated confusion survives a serious attempt, rather than treating free as a moral obligation.
The weakness of Plus is the opposite temptation: apparent abundance encourages browsing instead of finishing. Its published catalog excludes some offerings, including degrees and MasterTrack certificates. Confirm the exact inclusion before subscribing; our recommendation does not extend to a program simply because Coursera hosts it.
A two-week decision before an annual commitment
Pick one small task such as a page that accepts input and displays a result. Spend two planned sessions learning, one building without following a tutorial line by line, and one explaining and revising the result. This is our suggested decision exercise, not an experiment we have run on learners.
If the task exposes missing instruction that a named course clearly covers, a paid course may be justified. If the task is unfinished because no sessions happened, the subscription is unlikely to solve the immediate problem. We have not compared completion rates, employment outcomes or teaching quality across these platforms, and we do not treat either certificate as a hiring guarantee.
