Separate learning from proof of completion

Alison's help center says its courses are free to study and complete. After completion, a printed or digital Certificate or Diploma can be purchased. The free Learner Record is another way to document your progress. These are different decisions: whether the course teaches the skill you need, and whether a particular document is worth buying.

We reviewed Alison's help pages and a signed-in browser workflow on 19 September 2026. We opened the Learning Outcomes lesson for Data Entry Tools and Techniques without payment. The dashboard subsequently showed one course at 0% and zero completed courses. The certificate shop required course completion. We did not take an assessment, complete the course, purchase a certificate or evaluate employer acceptance.

Try the free record first

Alison documents a Download control in the Learner Record box in Settings. The record includes started and completed courses and total study time. For one selected course, the Learner Verification option provides course information, study time and the final score, with a Print option.

The help page documents these options for desktop and mobile browsers and says the download feature is not yet available in the app. Use the browser if the app does not offer it.

Ask one concrete question before checkout

Tell the recipient the exact course title and the task you intend it to support. Ask whether a learner record, a paid certificate, a work sample or a different credential is required. Save the response beside your study plan. Paying for a nicer document does not establish that the recipient will accept it.

Record the final cost and decision

Use the worksheet to record the course URL, intended recipient, accepted evidence, quoted price, currency and any delivery charges. Leave unknowns blank rather than estimating a current certificate price. Decide separately whether to study, obtain the free record or buy the optional document.

  • Check the exact item and currency at checkout.
  • Keep a copy of the recipient's requirements.
  • Budget practice time as well as any optional purchase.
  • Use your own work sample to demonstrate what you can do.
